Drought of the 50s compared to previous Droughts

The information below was presented by Paul Frommer of Recon to the Edwards Aquifer Recovery
Implementation Program. The work is based on analysis of tree-ring data in Texas by Dr. Malcolm Cleaveland
at the University of Arkansas, going back to the 1500s. These data are for National Weather Service Division 6,
which covers the Texas Hill County.

Driest years: 1716, 1974, 1925, 1786, 1528
– 2008 is only the 88th driest year since 1500!
– 1956 is the 35th driest year since 1500!

Driest 5 consecutive years:
1713-17, 1739-43,1804-08, 1952-1956, 1785-89

Driest 10 consecutive years:
1707-16, 1948-1957,1800-09, 1664-73, 1777-86

Driest 20 Consecutive years:
1697-1716, 1801-20, 1841-60, 1950-69, 1560-79
